Senate Bill 385 that would allow school shootings to qualify for the death penalty passed the Senate Committee on Corrections and Criminal Law today with a vote of 7-2. Sen. Brandt Hershman (R) is the bill’s sponsor. The bill would allow for sentences of life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty to be sought in instances of aggravated murder on school or university property. Hershman said this legislation was motivated by the Jan. 21, 2014 murder of Andrew Boldt on the Purdue University campus. On Sept. 19 Boldt’s murderer, Cody Cousin was sentenced to 65 years, the maximum sentence as for his mental and ecstasy problems. SB 385 will now move to the full Senate for further consideration.
