A St. Tammany Parish jury recommended the death sentence for Jeffrey Clark, 50, white. This is the 1st of 5 capital murder trials involving the so-called "Angola 5," a group that attempted an escape from the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola.Clark was convicted of first-degree murder in the death of Capt. David Knapps. On Dec. 28, 1999 six inmates who were serving life sentences for murder took three prison guards hostage in Camp D. The hostage takers bludgeoned and stabbed Knapps, to death. Armed guards ended the rebellion by shooting the inmates, killing one, 26-year old Joel Durham, and seriously wounding another. 4 other inmates are still awaiting 1st-degree murder trials. The trials have been delayed by a number of problems, including the deaths of three defense attorneys. Clark, who acted as his own attorney, already was serving a life sentence for killing an employee in 1984.
