Edwin Turner, 38, white, was executed today. Turner was convicted of killing Eddie Brooks, 37, and Everett Curry, 38, on Dec. 13, 1995, while robbing gas stations with a friend, Paul Stewart, in a spree that netted about $400. Stewart, 17 at the time, testified against Turner and was sentenced to life in prison. Turner was severely disfigured from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His attorneys say he attempted suicide when he was 18 years old by putting a rifle in his mouth and pulling the trigger. Turner becomes the 1st condemned inmate to be put to death this year in Mississippi, the 16th overall since the state resumed capital punishment in 1983, the 3rd condemned inmate to be put to death this year in the USA and the 1280th overall since the nation resumed executions on January 17, 1977.
