The Oregon Supreme Court, for the 3rd time, has overturned a death sentence against Robert Paul Langley Jr., 52, white. His case dates to 1989, when separate Marion County juries sentenced him to death for the Dec. 10, 1987 murder of Anne Gray, 39 and the April 14, 1988 murder of Larry Rockenbrant, 24. The state Supreme Court reversed both death sentences in 1992. The sentence in the Gray case was one of nearly two dozen overturned because of a 1989 U.S. Supreme Court ruling about mitigating evidence . The Court reversed the conviction and sentence in the Rockenbrant case because the trial judge improperly admitted evidence from the Gray murder. In the Rockenbrant case, he was sentenced to life in prison with a 30-year minimum. In the Gray case he was sentenced to death a second time in 1994. Upon appeal in 2000, the Supreme Court again reversed his death sentence in the Gray case, ruling that the jury failed to consider an option of life in prison without the possibility of parole. He was sentenced again to death in the Gray case on Feb. 3, 2006 (see). In the Rockenbrant case, he was sentenced to life in prison with a 30-year minimum. Today, in essence, the justices decided that Langley was erroneously compelled to represent himself in court when he was sentenced to death again in 2006, and sent the case back to Marion County Circuit Court.
