York County Judge Richard K. Renn, citing ineffective counsel and remarks by the prosecutor and judge, has thrown out the death sentence of Milton Montalvo, and ordered a new sentencing hearing. Montalvo was sentenced to death in York County on February 14, 2000. Montalvo, 54, is 1 of 2 brothers convicted in a double murder. Montalvo was convicted of 1st-degree murder in the April 19, 1998 slayings of his former girlfriend, 44-year-old Miriam Asencio, and 37-year-old Manual Ramirez Santana. Montalvo's brother, Noel, was convicted in a separate trial and also sentenced to death. His appeal was revived in 2015.
