Thomas J. Gorby, 52, whose death sentence for the 1985 murder of a man was vacated has been resentenced to life in prison. Washington County Common Pleas Judge Debbie O'Dell-Seneca imposed the new sentence. on June 20, 2006 the state Supreme Court ruled that Mr. Gorby must be resentenced because his attorney during trial did not raise his client's mental health as an issue. The local district attorney declined to pursue the death penalty for Mr. Gorby. Mr. Gorby fatally stabbed Drayton Sphar, 38, in December 1985.
