A Tarrant County jury decided unanimously that Erick Davila, 21, black, should die. Davila was convicted Feb. 19 of the April 6, 2008, shooting deaths of Queshawn Stevenson, 5, and her grandmother Annette Stevenson, 48, both blacks, during a children's birthday party. 4 other people, including 3 children, were wounded. Davila was a member of a Fort Worth street gang, and authorities believe Annette Stevenson's adult son, Jerry Stevenson, may have been his intended target in retaliation for a prior gang-related incident in which Davila was wounded. Jerry Stevenson was unhurt during Davila's shooting rampage. Defense attorneys had asked jurors to spare Davila's life because of his low IQ, mental instability and deprived childhood. He was conceived when his mother was raped at age 13, and his father is in prison for murder. State District Judge Sharen Wilson imposed the death sentence. Erick Davila was forgiven by the victims' family after today's sentencing.
