Guadalupe Esparza, 46, Hispanic, was executed. Esparza had been sentenced in 2001 for slipping into a San Antonio apartment in the middle of the night, snatching Alyssa Vasquez, a 7-year-old girl, and raping and strangling her in June 1999. Esparza becomes the 13th condemned inmate to be put to death this year in Texas and the 477th overall since the state resumed capital punishment on Dec. 7, 1982. Esparza becomes the 42nd condemned inmate to be put to death this year in the USA and the 1276th overall since the nation resumed executons on January 17, 1977.
