On October 17, 2023, Martinez shot and killed Lt. Resendez during a high-speed, countywide police chase. The pursuit began with a traffic stop on South Padre Island and traversed multiple cities before ending in Brownsville, Texas.
A Cameron County jury initially found the 21-year-old guilty of capital murder earlier in October 2026.
During the punishment phase, prosecutors characterized Martinez as a coward and a cartel member. The defense presented testimony detailing Martinez's childhood marked by severe neglect and abuse.
