Gary Ridgway, who murdered at least 48 women, transfers to high-security Colorado prison to be brought out of isolation after 11 years. Ridgway, 66, White, is the serial killer known as the Green River Killer. Ridgway was arrested on November 30, 2001 after DNA evidence pointed to him in the murders of Shirley Shirell, 18, Denise Bush, 23, and 16-year-old Angela Marie Girdner, who were all discovered by a passerby. After his arrest, he entered an unprecedented plea where he wouldn't receive the death penalty if he confessed to the murders. He was initially convicted of 48 separate murders (see November 5, 2003). Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Ridgway is believed to have murdered at least 71 women (according to Ridgway, in an interview with Sheriff Reichert in 2001) near Seattle and Tacoma, Washington. His court statements later reported that he had killed so many, he lost count. A majority of the murders occurred between 1982 and 1984. Most of the victims were runaways, prostitutes, and drug addicts. After his conviction in 2004, he has spent his prison sentence in isolation. It has now been reported that he was transferred to a high-security prison in Florence, Colorado, to be put back into population.
