The House Judiciary Committee voted to pass SB 5339, which would legislatively abolish the death penalty in the state. The bill, which previously passed the State Senate, now advances to the full House, where it is expected to pass largely as it did in the Senate, along party lines. The Washington Supreme Court judicially abolished the state's death penalty last October, declaring its capital punishment statute unconstitutional and directing that all prisoners on the state's death row be resentenced to life without possibility of release.
