Vietnam executed a school teacher for raping six pupils aged between seven and eight, despite an appeal for clemency by parents' of his victims, a court official said.
Thirty-seven-year-old art teacher Nguyen Van Phu was executed by firing squad on May 21 in the Central Highlands province of Daklak, the official there said.
Phu was sentenced to death in 1999 after being found guilty of raping six of his pupils, four aged seven and two aged eight, and sexually assaulting six others.
"Parents of the pupils filed a request to save the man from the death sentence due to their traditional respect for teachers in general," the official said.
"But we could not forgive such a criminal."
The official said Phu had strongly rejected the verdict against him despite "undeniable evidence".
Vietnam's communist government executes about 100 people every year for crimes ranging from murder to drug trafficking or serious cases of rape.
An increased number of cases involving sexual abuse of children have been reported in official media in recent years.
