The ring leader, Nguyen Van Vinh, 40, and his three accomplices aged 28 to 43, were convicted in the northern province of Bac Giang of smuggling and selling nearly 80 kilograms (175 pounds) of heroin from Laos in 2003 and early 2004. They had been arrested in April 2004. Also on the same day, Trinh Van Lap, another trafficker, was sentenced to death after being convicted of smuggling more than two kilograms of heroin in the southern business capital of Ho Chi Minh City.
