Viktoria Mamontova, a Ukrainian woman who was sentenced to death for drug possession in Thailand, had her sentence commuted. The Thai Court of Appeals revised Mamontova's death sentence, replacing it with 33 years and 4 months in jail. Mamontova had been sentenced to death in Thailand for possession of 1.5 kilos of heroin on August 17, 2001. Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma had personally asked Thai authorities to commute her sentence.
