William Irvan, 37, was sentenced to death for raping and killing Michele Shadbolt, a 23-year-old mother, in her home Feb. 14, 1987. The key witness who linked Irvan to the killing was Tamara Llamas, serving 4 life sentences in a federal prison for murder in North Carolina. She testified she once dated Irvan and he told her he killed Shadbolt. During the penalty phase of the trial before state District Judge Debbie Stricklin, several women testified Irvan had beaten or sexually assaulted them.
