Willie Mack Moddon, who has lived on death row for nearly 2 decades and narrowly escaped his death date last June, pleaded guilty to 5 additional crimes. For each plea Moddon was sentenced to an additional life sentence to run consecutively. A state district judge also ruled that Moddon, 54, is mentally retarded, which means he likely will never be executed for the July 29, 1984 stabbing death of Debroah Davenport during a robbery. The U.S. Supreme Court on June 28, 2002 overturned Moddon's death sentence and remanded the case to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. The decision came a month after the nation's highest court had declared the execution of mentally retarded killers as unconstitutional.
