Wyoming has not had an execution since 1992. Aaron James McKinney and Russell Arthur Henderson, both 21, were charged with capital murder in the October 1998 death of a gay man, Matthew Shepard. Both defendants received life sentences in 1999, instead of death. Matthew Shepard's family spoke in opposition to the death penalty and many gay and lesbian groups also publicly opposed a death sentence.
