Xie Zhonghua and Wu Jiang were executed after being convicted of murdering a police officer in Zhanjiang City, south China's Guangdong Province. According to the verdict, on the evening of 27 February 2003, the two rode by motorcycle onto a street in Zhanjiang, intending to commit a robbery. At about 10 pm two women passed by carrying mobile phones. Xie got off the motorbike, snatched a phone from one of the women and tried to make his escape. Police officer Yang Jingyu, who was at the scene, tried to intervene, but was stabbed in the chest by Xie, who later escaped with his accomplice. The accused were apprehended on March 2, and sentenced to death by the Zhanjiang Intermediate Court.
