Xu Jie and Du Jiansheng, two officials from the poor southwestern province of Guizhou were executed for embezzling 72.7 million yuan ($8.8 million). They colluded from 1997 to 2000 to steal off-budget funds, cash from government loans and state treasury bills. They were sentenced to death in August 2000 and lost their final appeal in September.
