Foreign Secretary Robin Cook ordered an urgent review of all cases of Britons facing the death penalty in foreign jails and has strengthened government policy so diplomats and ministers can intervene early in cases in an effort to prevent executions. The shift in policy means diplomats can intervene as soon as a British national is charged with a capital crime, not as a last resort after legal appeals have been exhausted."
Our overriding objective is to avoid the execution of British nationals," said Brian Wilson, the Foreign Office Minister.
"We will now express our opposition to the death penalty and its use on a British national at whatever state and level is judged appropriate from the moment when the imposition of a death sentence on a British national becomes a possibility."
