YEMEN. COURT UPHOLDS DEATH SENTENCE AGAINST JARALLAH'S ASSASSIN

Yemen’s Supreme Court upheld the death sentence handed down to Ali Ahmad Jarallah, convicted of murdering the leading Socialist politician Jarallah Omar. Omar was shot dead while attending a congress for the opposition Islamists party in Sanaa on December 28, 2002. Jaralaah had been convicted of the murder by a primary court in September 2003. The verdict was backed by a court of appeals on April 23, 2005.  The convict had told the courts that he killed Omar for his alleged public secular opinions. He was due to be executed by firing squad after the sentence was endorsed by President Ali Abdallah Salih.
