Five men have been sentenced to death in Zambia after being convicted on charges of murder, attempted murder and aggravated robbery.
In this case, seven people who included Ketson Ngondo, Anderson Phiri, Lone Zimba, Said Mukanaka, Fred Sakala, Gregory Lungu and Chester Chipayo were jointly charged with murder, attempted murder and aggravated robbery contrary to the Laws of Zambia.
Lungu died while in prison and Chipayo was acquitted of all charges.
In count one, it was alleged that on December 18, 2008 in Lusaka, the suspects murdered Clement Mwanza.
In count two, it is alleged that on October 26, 2009, the suspects murdered Zakela Ahmadi and stole from Ahmadi Yurvus K15,000 cash.
In count three, the suspects on the same date in Lusaka jointly and while acting together and while armed with a gun attempted to murder Mohammed Yakub.
All the accused pleaded not guilty and the prosecution called 12 witnesses to establish the case against them.
Lusaka High Court judge Christine Phiri said the prosecution had discharged its burden of proof beyond reasonable doubt that Ngondo, Phiri, Zimba, Mukanaka and Sakala murdered Ahmadi, attempted to murder Mohammed and committed aggravated robbery.
