The Italian Senate delegation, visiting Zambia to lobby in favour of abolition, is led by commission president Enrico Pianetta (FI) and includes senators Antonio Iovine (DS), Alessandro Forlani (UDC), and Cinzia Dato (Margherita).
HOC secretary general Sergio D’Elia and treasurer Elisabetta Zamparutti are also part of the delegation, which is slated for high-level meetings with government authorities. The delegation will meet President Levy Mwanawasa, who has already declared himself for the abolition of the death penalty in Zambia.
In recognition of his firm stand, bolstered by a number of commutations, even when such a course of action was not easy – for instance when scores of soldiers convicted of treason applied for mercy – HOC dedicated to President Mwanawasa its 2004 report on the death penalty worldwide.
The delegation’s visit is expected to end on October 21.
