The Federal High Court of Ethiopia sentenced three genocide convicts to death and one other to a 20-year prison term for killing 207 people in East and West Harerge zones in 1991.
In its verdict, the 5th Criminal Bench of the court sentenced Iman Kelil Umar, Beyan Ahmad Osman and Asli Ahmad to death while sending Biftu Roba to 20 years behind bars.
The court passed the sentence on the first defendant, Iman after it found him guilty of involvement in the killing of all of the 207 people while the second defendant, Beyan, was found guilty of participating in the murder of 205 of the stated number of persons.
The court had also found the third defendant, Asli, guilty of involvement in the killing of 89 people. The fourth defendant was also found guilty of killing one woman while terrorizing people and the government by being armed, according to the verdict.
The convicts, who were members of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), killed the stated number of people by accusing the victims of being members of the Amhara ethnic group and spies of the ruling party, EPRDF [ruling coalition Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front], the court said.
The death sentence would be applied following the approval by the head of state.
