A 49 years-old Iranian dissident, Gholamreza Khosravi Savajani, was hanged in the Rajaishahr prison of Karaj early in the morning. The office of Tehran’s Prosecutor confirmed the execution and wrote that Mr. Khosravi “was convicted of moharebeh (waging war against the God) through cooperation with People's Mujahideen Organization of Iran/Mujahideen-e-Khalgh (PMOI/MEK).”
Khosravi was arrested in 2007 and sentenced to 6 years in prison for having given information and economic support to the Iranian opposition group PMOI. However, while he was in prison in 2010, he was tried again for the same charges and sentenced to death after being convicted of moharebeh. The death sentence was confirmed by the Supreme Court on 21 April 2012. Reports indicate that he was subjected to physical and psychological torture after his arrest.
A report from Iran's official news agency claimed that Khosravi was also accused of providing photos of the country's military facilities to the PMOI, as well as helping to recruit for the group. The report also said that Khosravi was arrested in 1997, after having been previously detained from 1981 to 1986.
Khosravi was reportedly held for over 40 months in solitary confinement in various detention centers since he was arrested in 2008 for his links to the PMOI. Both his detention and sentence were strongly condemned by human rights groups. Khosravi “did not receive a fair trial in total disregard of both international law and the Iranian law,” said Amnesty International in a statement.
