a 69-year-old death row inmate died of multiple organ failure after a battle with cancer at a medical facility in the Tokyo Detention House, Japan. Kazuo Sawachi, a former senior officer with Tokyo's Metropolitan Police Department, was accused of killing two people for money and jewellery in Yamanashi Prefecture in 1984. His death sentence was finalised in 1993 after he withdrew his appeal to the Supreme Court. He had been receiving treatment for stomach cancer since in October 2007, according to the detention house.
