a man was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for killing a super model after twice having sex with her at a popular tourism destination in Yunnan Province, China. The Lijiang Intermediate People's Court found Wei Lei deliberately killed Xu Qian during their business trip from Qingdao, Shandong Province, to Yunnan's Lijiang City in November 2007. The court also ordered that Wei compensate Xu's family 400,000 yuan (US$58,400). Wei, 35, appealed to a higher court for a lighter punishment as he claimed he had arranged with Xu to commit suicide together. Wei, unemployed, planned to open a boutique store in Qingdao selling handcrafts and clothing from Lijiang. He hired Xu to improve the image of his planned store and promised to pay her 7,000 yuan for a four-day business trip to Lijiang, it said. Xu, a Qingdao native, was China's Miss Tourism Queen International in 2004. Wei said both felt tired of life and proposed to die together. Wei said Xu was not willing to kill him so he grabbed her neck and choked her to death. Wei said he then used the knife to slash his wrist but woke up the next morning. Xu's boyfriend Li Jinyu tried to contact her and eventually tracked down Wei.
