A right-wing activist will be sent to the gallows after an appeal court overruled a life term handed down at a district court.
Presiding Judge Makazu Ikeda at the Osaka High Court decided that Takehiko Kubori should pay with his life for killing two fellow right-wingers in the early 1990s.
"The death penalty is the only option available," Ikeda said. "He made light of human lives. His criminal responsibility is grave."
Kubori, 38, strangled a fellow activist Toshiaki Ichikawa in February 1992 over financial disputes. In April 1994, Kubori throttled Haruo Fujita, a senior member of his right-wing group, and robbed him.
The Sakai branch of the Osaka District Court sentenced Kubori to life imprisonment in March 2000, but prosecutors had appealed the decision, arguing that he got off too lightly.
