Ahmed Mu'azu, Governor of Bauchi State, advised sharia judges in the state not to rush judgement on women accused of adultery and thus threatened with death by stoning. He said that under the sharia law in force in the state, divorced women should not be automatically arrested if found to be pregnant. "A woman found pregnant within five years of divorce cannot just be accused of adultery because the child could be her former husband's. That is what sharia says," he said. "In such a case it is up to the former husband to go to court and prove that the child is not his by swearing an oath," he added.
