An Iranian military court spared the lives of two secret agents sentenced to death in 2001 for the murder of a dissident and his wife, Iran's IRNA news agency reported.
Former Intelligence Ministry agents Ali Roshani and Mahmoud Jafarzadeh had their death sentences reduced to 10 years in jail after being forgiven by relatives of their victims - Darioush and Parvaneh Forouhar, the court said, quoted by IRNA. They were among 18 "rogue" intelligence officers convicted of the 1998 murder of the Forouhars and two other dissidents. Three were sentenced to death and the rest to prison terms.
Iran's supreme court later threw out the sentences and ordered a retrial. The military court said the other defendants had been given more or less the same sentences as before, including those "who gave the orders to kill". Mid-level intelligence officials Mostafa Kazemi and Mehrdad Alikhani, who reportedly masterminded the murders, were each given four life sentences in 2001.
