BANGLADESH: GAZI IDRIS SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR WAR CRIMES

International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) handed death sentence to Idris Ali Sardar alias Gazi Idris of Shariatpur for his alleged crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.
The three-member tribunal led by Justice Anwarul Haque began the proceedings at 10:50am on December 5.
In his opening speech ICT chairman Justice Haque said that the verdict has been arrived at by majority.
Justice Shahinur Islam then started to read out the summary of the 486-page verdict. Justice Haque will announce the sentences.
The trial concluded on November 2 with closing arguments by the prosecution and the defence after the tribunal indicted them in May this year.
Thirteen witnesses have testified for the prosecution conducted by lawyers Zead Al Malum, Rishikesh Shaha and Rezia Sultana Chaman.
The State appointed Gazi MH Tamim to argue for fugitive Idris.
The ICT had framed charges against the two Razakars in the case on May 2.
Of them, Sulaiman Mollah, 84, from Kashipur Muslimpara, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on October 25 due to old-age complications.
Previously on June 14, 2015, the tribunal issued a warrant for the arrest of the two Razakars in connection with a case filed for their crimes against humanity.
Following that on October 29, 2015, the prosecution submitted the probe report against seven Razakars, including Solaiman and Idris.
Later, police arrested Solaiman Mollah from Kashipur village in Sadar upazila of the district that night itself.
In 2010, Abdus Samad Talukdar, a freedom fighter, filed the case against seven suspected Razakars with Shariatpur Sadar Police Station.
