Bao Zhufa, a farmer in central China who killed five people with a hammer, was sentenced to death. Zhufa, 34, committed the crimes near the border between Hunan and Hubei provinces over the past three years, the Beijing Times said.
He was also convicted of injuring 13 people, in a total of 16 robberies, during which he stole 10,000 yuan (1,200 dollars).
In one case, Bao hit a couple in the head while they slept, seriously injuring them, and stole 4,400 yuan from under their pillows, the report said. He was arrested in May after he committed his last crime, similarly injuring another farmer and taking 400 yuan and a mobile phone.
