Cardinal Godfried Danneels said he supported capital punishment in theory but was opposed to it in practice, Belgian television reported. The Belgian cardinal argued during a television debate that the "legal notion" of the death penalty should be upheld for the most serious crimes. "Pronouncing death penalty is symbolically important, but I naturally cannot agree to them being carried out," Danneels, 70, said during the debate. "You remove the meaning of somebody's life. He is made an outcast" by a death sentence, the cardinal said when asked to clarify his remarks.
