David Mitchell, 27, was hanged at the main Fox Hill prison in the capital Nassau. He was convicted of stabbing to death a German couple, Horst and Traude Henning in 1994, as they slept in their seaside home at Treasure Cay on the island of Abaco. His execution took place despite appeals for mercy from human rights groups, including Amnesty International. A petition was pending with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, alleging his rights had been violated. The Henning's son Carsten had also appealed for clemency for Mitchell, according to his lawyer Wayne Munroe.
