Death row inmate John Higgs, 51, killed himself while under suicide watch. Higgs cut his wrists with a razor and hid his hands in a slop bucket while it filled with blood.
Edison Thurston, 32, another death row inmate was given a last-minute stay by the Ministry of National Security, to allow him time to pursue appeals to London's Privy Council, the court of final appeal for some Caribbean countries.
Higgs's suicide and Thurston's stay put paid to a scheduled triple hanging on January 6. Together with a third convict, David Mitchell, they had been set to hang at one-hour intervals. Thurston, an auto mechanic, was condemned for murdering an unidentified man in 1995. John Higgs was convicted of murdering his estranged wife and entombing her body under the stairwell of an apartment building in 1993.
