Denmark has been abolitionist since 1978. The death penalty was abolished for ordinary crimes in 1933.
On November 28, 2002 Denmark deposited with the Council of Europe the instrument of ratification of Protocol No 13 to the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms banning the death penalty in all circumstances.
Like its European Union partners, it refuses to send prisoners to countries where they could face the death penalty. The last execution took place in 1950.
On December 18, 2007 Denmark co-sponsored and voted in favour of the Resolution on a Moratorium on the Use of the Death Penalty at the UN General Assembly.
