Eight Iranians sentenced to death for murder were hanged at dawn in Tehran's Ghasr prison, jail authorities said. Five more, who were to have been executed at the same time, were spared at the last minute, after the heirs or relatives of their victims intervened, they added.
According to another report, by the daily Qods, the number of Iranians, sentenced to death for murder, and hanged at dawn at the Ghasr Prison was eleven. Three more, who were to have been executed at the same time, were reprieved after intervention by the heirs or relatives of their victims, the daily Qods said.
The "eye for an eye" law in force in Iran since the Islamic revolution of 1979 calls for execution for all murders, but provides for the death sentence to be commuted to a lengthy jail term if the family of the victim pardons the killer.
