Foreign Minister Lamberto Dini welcomed the decision of the Turkish coalition government to postpone Kurdistan Worker's Party leader Abdullah Ocalan's execution following a request by the European Court of Human Rights. This important decision may lead to hopes that Turkey means to abolish the death penalty from its legislation, Dini said. MP Francesco D'Onofrio of the Centro Cristiano Democratico (CCD) considered the decision "obvious, but nevertheless appreciated." He expressed his conviction that Turkey would not execute Ocalan.
