Four people were sentenced to death for the murder of Rajwinder Kaur's husband and in-laws.
The gruesome murder took place in 1999 when Rajwinder Kaur married Ravindra Singh Matharu against her parents' wishes. Although Matharu belonged to the Sikh community, the girl's parents were opposed to him as he belonged to a lower caste.
On May 30 1999, Rajwinder's mother Maya Kaur, maternal aunt Nirmala Kaur, along with relatives Bhagwan Singh Randhwa, Jagpal Singh Randhwa, Kanwaljeet Randhwa, Kuldeep Randhwa, Baldip Singh Sardar and Bhagtawar Singh Randhwa, visited Matharu's house in Panvel. They were armed with swords, rods and a revolver.
Rajwinder's family first tried to take her back home. When her husband Ravindra Matharu, brother Harvinder Singh Matharu, mother Lakkwinder Kaur and father Dileep Singh Matharu tried to stop the girl's relatives, the latter assaulted them. They opened fire on the boy's family, killing them.
Rajwinder's family even tried to push her out of the gallery. The girl, however, survived the gruesome incident.
The girl's mother and maternal aunt were given life sentences, while four of her relatives, Bhagwan, Jagpal, Kanwaljeet and Bhagtawa, were sentenced to death.
