Georgia forbids the execution of the mentally retarded but allows the execution of juvenile offenders of 17 years and above. The state has life without parole. A jury decides the sentence. The state board of pardons and paroles has the exclusive authority to grant clemency. A law, approved in 2000, introduced the lethal injection for crimes committed after may 1, 2000. On October 5, 2001 the Supreme Court of Georgia ruled that the use of the electric chair to execute condemned inmates was unconstitutional.
