HANDS OFF CAIN'S MISSION TO ETHIOPIA

The delegation of Hands off Cain, made up of Ambassador Claudio Moreno and Laura Harth,  met Deputy Minister of Justice Gedeon Thimothewos on 7 December 2018 morning in Addis Ababa. There has been discussion of the profound reforms in favor of the rule of law, democracy and human rights that this Government wants to address. In that context, it was accepted the request to consider a change of vote on the UN Resolution for the moratorium on the death penalty that will be voted at General Assembly on December 17 in New York. The Deputy Minister expressed his personal conviction in favor of the issue, emphasizing the status of the Ethiopian State as "de facto abolitionist" given that since 2007 there have been no executions. He assured the delegation that the proposal will be discussed with the Ministers of Justice and Foreign Affairs.
