"I am personally against the death penalty, but it would be incorrenct to impose conditions on the Iraqi people before the trial has even to commence", said Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini when questioned by journalists on the possibility of putting pressure on Iraq to stop Saddam from being sentenced to death.
"We can't say to them - the Minister added - 'arrive up to here then stop', it would be a trial conducted by Iraq. We hope it won't be revenge. I believe the world should be shown how much evil the dictator did to his people and to the international community."
"Not out of revenge, but because it is the right thing to do", the Frattini concluded.
