INDIA. SUPREME COURT COMMUTES DEATH PENALTY FOR MURDER

the Supreme Court of India converted to life imprisonment the death sentence handed down to Aloke Nath of Kolkata for the murder of his younger brother.
The court acquitted three other accused, including Aloke's wife who was sentenced to life imprisonment in the alleged conspiracy. The Bench held that the crime did not fall under the "rarest of rare” category.
The prosecution had alleged that Aloke Nath, his wife, her brother in law and a friend had killed Aloke’s younger brother Biswanath in January 1994 in order to gain possession of his property.
