IRAN FREES TWO SENTENCED TO DEATH BY STONING

an Iranian man and woman convicted of adultery and sentenced to death by stoning were freed on appeal, the ILNA news agency reported.
Gholamali Eskandari and Gilan Mohammadi were released from a prison in the central city of Esfahan, after their defense lawyers won the appeal. The two had spent six years behind bars.
In August 2008, the judiciary said it would scrap stoning as a punishment in Iran's new Islamic penal code, the outlines of which have been adopted by parliament the details have yet to be debated by MPs.
