Iran insisted that it wanted France to extradite members of an armed opposition group arrested in a major roundup of the exile organisation. French police had raided the offices and homes of the People's Mujahideen, a left-wing armed group based in Paris, which is opposed to Iran's clerical establishment. "Our people have been harmed by this grouplet... it is normal that our people consider their extradition to Iran as the nation's natural right," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi told a news conference. He said no formal extradition request had yet been made and the matter would need to be negotiated with France. A French foreign ministry spokesman said there was no question of extradition. Diplomats said handing over the detainees to Iran, a country where they might face the death penalty, was against EU rules.
