Iraqi Communist Party sources reported that Ali Hasan al-Majid, the cousin of the dictator Saddam Hussein, gave orders to set up a special military court at the headquarters of the 4th Army Corps in Imarah. The court lacked any semblance of justice denying victims even the most fundamental rights, such as the right to defence and the appointment of a lawyer. 40 members of the armed forces of various military ranks were subsequently executed by firing squad in the prison courtyard. The reason for the massacre is unknown.
