Jur'at Nuri and Abduhalik Abdureshit were executed in Yining city in the Xinjiang region, for working to overthrow Chinese rule. Executions were carried out after the appeals of their deaths sentences issued in July 1999 failed.
Abduhalik Abdureshit claimed he was tortured. Security forces have repeatedly clashed with militant Uighurs, the largest of the region's Turkic-speaking Muslim groups. In one skirmish in April 1998, paramilitary police shot dead six Uighur youths and afterwards arrested Jur'at Nuri and Abduhalik Abdureshit and nine others suspects.
