Kyrgyz President Askar Akayev signed a decree prolonging two-year moratorium on capital punishment, which expired on 31st December 2000

Kyrgyz President Askar Akayev signed a decree prolonging two-year moratorium on capital punishment, which expired on 31st December 2000. The decree, took effect on 9th December 2000, and was applied to the people who were sentenced to death before 31 December 2001. In addition, the decree instructed the government to consider the issue of the advisability of Kyrgyzstan's joining some international agreements directly connected with the protection of human rights.
