Nazruddin Abdul Gani, a 22-year-old Indonesian volunteer for a Danish-sponsored aid group in violence-ravaged Aceh gave a first-hand account of arbitrary executions in Aceh. He said that on December 6 he watched in horror as three of his colleagues were gunned down and five others tortured by what he believed was a military death squad. Nazruddin, who escaped, said they were killed because they were treating torture victims in a stronghold area of the Free Aceh Movement. He said that his abductors appeared to be plainclothes soldiers operating with the concurrence of uniformed military officials in the area. He said he and his co-workers were taken to a military command post and past two army checkpoints before being driven into a forest, where his three colleagues were shot by two of the abductors.
