NORTH KOREA: MILITARY OFFICER EXECUTED FOR STEALING RESERVE GRAIN

A North Korean military officer arrested for embezzling state reserve grain meant for the armed forces was recently executed in public.

A Daily NK source in South Pyongan province said on July 21, 2026 that authorities arrested a senior colonel from a coastal guard unit based in Nampo for stealing large amounts of the military’s reserve grain. “He was executed by firing squad on July 12 in front of members of his unit,” the source said.

The officer took advantage of lax nighttime security last month, the source said. He secretly removed several dozen tons of reserve grain from a warehouse under his own command. He then tried to transport it by vehicle to Nampo port. Sentries guarding the warehouse spotted him first.

Those sentries had long resented corruption among officers and noticed a large quantity of grain moving suspiciously in the middle of the night. It appeared the warehouse’s security chief had allowed it to happen. The sentries reported what they saw to their unit’s security department right away.

The senior colonel was then arrested and taken to the Military Security Bureau for questioning. Interrogators pressed him hard, and once his connections and other offenses came to light, he was quickly referred to a court martial.

He received the maximum sentence, execution, for stealing reserve grain during a domestic food crisis and trying to smuggle it out. Soldiers gathered at a shooting range near Nampo port to watch.

The case drew unusually strong condemnation, the source explained, as the military is already unsettled by food shortages. A senior officer tried to profit personally from the state’s grain reserves at exactly that moment.

Following the execution, the party’s central leadership and the military’s General Political Bureau issued sharp warnings vowing to root out corruption in the armed forces. Fear among senior military officials has reportedly reached new heights as a result.

“Officers mobilized to the shooting range to witness the execution were deeply shaken,” the source said. “Their faces turned pale. They left without making eye contact with each other.”

Military authorities have since imposed a special security posture around the Nampo port area. An inspection team dispatched from the party’s central leadership is now stationed at the port, where it directly oversees every ship’s entry and exit and all cargo loading, the source said.

Even routine transport of construction materials and seafood has come under full restriction as a result. The source said that this has made daily life harder still for people living near the port.
